In the United Kingdom, the Benelux countries, Germany and Italy, the Omega was popular as a police car and was commonly used as a security vehicle to transport politicians other important personalities.

The Opel Omega, produced between 1986 and 2003, was the designated replacement of the Opel Rekord and was voted European Car of the Year for 1987.

The Omega development project, which was engineered towards a more aerodynamic body in view of higher gas prices and public demand for more fuel efficient cars, cost Opel 2 Billion Deutschmark, or around 1 billion Euros.

The top of the line Omega, equipped with a 3.0 L V6 engine, was the most expensive Vauxhall/Opel on the market at the time at £30,000.

The Omega has been featured in an array of European hit movies, including "Unnatural Causes" (2008), "Festen" (1998), and "Das Blut Der Templer" (2004).

Compared to its predecessors, the Omega was packed with an array of modern technological advances, including Electronic Engine Management, ABS, and an air-conditioned glove compartment. These were new to Opel in general, if not to the entire segment of the European auto market.

The Omega 3000 was the sports version of the Omega. Featuring a 6.3 L, 12-valve engine, the 3000 had a top speed of 222 km/h and could accelerate from 0-100 km'h in only 8.8 seconds.

Following cessation of production in 1993, the Omega car has also been converted into limousines and hearses.

For those who could afford it, Opel offered customers the Omega Club Package, available on all estates. The package included a ride height adjustment, special seats, and other extravagant luxuries for its time.

To compete in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), Opel, together with Irmscher, designed the Omega Evolution 500, a limited series model that accelerated from 0-100 km/h 7.5 seconds and had a top speed of 249 km/h. The racing version had a top speed of 300 km/h and could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a whopping 5 seconds.
