The Siamese is one of the first distinctly recognized breeds of Oriental cat. The exact origins of the breed are unknown, but it is believed to be from Southeast Asia, and is said to be descended from the sacred temple cats of Siam (now Thailand).

In the United Kingdom, all pointed Siamese-style cats are considered to be part of the Siamese breed. In the United States, the major cat registry, the Cat Fanciers' Association, considers only the four original colorations as Siamese: seal point, blue point, chocolate point, and lilac point.

Siamese cats tend to darken with age, and generally adult Siamese living in warm climates have lighter coats than those in cool climates.

Most Siamese cats reach sexual maturity at an early age - it is not uncommon for a female to experience her first heat at the age of 5 months. Spaying is recommended by the age of 6 months, and neutering at the age of 6 months or even earlier. If neutered at an early age, males generally do not spray.

They are extremely vocal, with a loud, low-pitched voice known as "Meezer" that has been compared to the cries of a human baby, and is persistent when demanding attention.

A health problem that is inherent in the Siamese is crossed eyes that though undesirable is not a problem for the cat and does not affect its behavior or longevity. The Siamese can cost anywhere between $200 and $800 with registered cats from reputable breeders being more expensive.

There are many breeds derived from the Siamese such as the Balinese, Burmese, Colorpoint Shorthair, Himalayan, Javanese, Occicat, Snowshoe, Tonkinese and the Thai Cat.

Siamese are affectionate and intelligent cats, renowned for their social nature. They enjoy being with people and are sometimes described as "extroverts". As there are extroverts Siamese, there also are very sensitive and nervous temperaments, which are not easily adapted to the changes of environment or to strangers.

In size, the Siamese are about what you think of when you think of an average-sized generic cat. Males weigh from 11-15 pounds, and females 8-12.
