Tonkinese cats are a recent cross between the Siamese and Burmese cat breeds, although, some assert that Tonkinese-like cats have existed since the early 1800's.

Tonkinese sold as pets usually cost $350-500. Sometimes breeders will have older cats available to a good home for much less; these can be excellent pets. Most breeders will not let them go until they are 12 weeks old, although this varies with the breeder.

In general Tonkinese cats are healthy cats with no known common genetic problems. As a Siamese derivative they share in common health issues. They are prone to gingivitis and brushing with a child's toothbrush is useful. Care should also be taken by your vet when anesthesia is used. As kittens they sometimes get upper respiratory infections (colds), but these are not usually serious.

When the Tonkinese was first established in Canada, the breed name was actually spelled "Tonkanese," which was a reference to the island in the musical 'South Pacific' where "half-breeds" suffered no discrimination.

One should not be alarmed if their Tonkinese should jump on their shoulders as they are extremely playful and have a love for heights.

The Tonkinese is more like the Burmese in temperament than the Siamese, that is, less high-strung and demanding. Their voices are also less piercing (or raucous, depending on taste) in most cases than the Siamese.

In 2001, the Tonkinese was moved from hybrid classification to an established breed.

Unlike most breeds of cat, the Tonkinese has been reported to frequently play fetch with their owners, a very unique characteristic.

Caring for Tonkinese is as easy as feeding a well-balanced feline diet, clipping their nails weekly (providing a scratching post and insisting they use it is also imperative), using a rubber brush to groom them, and of course the all important visit to the vet for check-ups and inoculations.

Tonkinese cats are commonly trim and muscular cats. They are typically heavier than they appear to be, due to their very muscular bodies.
