10 Facts about Afghan Hound

On August 3rd 2005, Korean scientist Hwang Woo-Suk announced that he had successfully cloned a dog, an Afghan Hound named Snuppy. This was the first cloned dog in history.

The Afghan Hound is a large dog that stands up to 30 inches tall and can weigh up to 27 kilos.

The temperament of the typical Afghan Hound can be aloof and dignified, but happy and clownish when playing. The breed has a reputation among trainers of having a relatively slow “obedience intelligence.”

Although seldom used today for hunting in Europe and America where they are popular, Afghan Hounds are frequent participants in ‘lure coursing’ events and are also popular in the sport of conformation showing.

Afghan Hounds are not known for their intelligence. A recent survey of dog obedience judges ranked the Afghan Hound dead last out of 110 breeds in ‘intelligence.’

Afghan Hounds have a median lifespan of about 12 years with many living to 18 years with the correct care.

There are various allergies that the Afghan Hound is susceptible to, however, assorted cancers are also prone in the breed and regular checks should be made to ensure a healthy dog.

As a result of its distinctive appearance the Afghan Hound has been represented in animated feature films ‘Disney’s Lady and the Tramp,’ and ‘101 Dalmatians.’

The average litter size of the Afghan Hound is 8 with some having up to 15 puppies in a single litter.

The Afghan Hound is a very old sight hound dog breed that is primarily distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end.
