10 Facts about Westie
1
There are several theories regarding the origin of the Westie. Some sources credit Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm and his kin of Poltalloch in the Argyll region of western Scotland as the architect of this breed in the 1800s. Others point to the 8th Duke of Argyll (Chieftain of Clan Campbell) as the mastermind behind the Westie.
2
The price of Westie puppies vary significantly depending on where you live, although it is safe to say that most puppies will sell for anywhere between $400 and $750 USD. The average cost of maintaining a Westie is less than $100 per year.
3
Although most Westies are fairly healthy, some are prone to chronic skin problems, Perthe's disease (hip problems), hernias, and jawbone calcification. Westie puppies may be affected by a disease known as craniomandibular osteopathy, known colloquially as "Lion Jaw". The disease is an autosomal recessive condition, so for a puppy to be affected by the disease, both the parents must carry the faulty gene.
4
Westies have a life expectancy of 15 years or more.
5
The Westies coat should be trimmed about every four months and stripped twice a year. Because they are prone to allergies and skin issues, they should be closely monitored and should not be bathed too frequently, as it may aggravate their sensitivities
6
Not the most energetic of dogs, Westies are suitable for both urban and country life. They are very active indoors and will do okay without a yard, although they should be properly exercised, including a long, daily walk.
7
Though not fully hypo-allergenic, the American Medical Association (AMA) reports that Westies have relatively low dander (ranked number 7) and may be acceptable for individuals with asthma or other allergies.
8
Westies typically weigh from 15 to 20 lbs (6.8 - 9 kgs) for male dogs and 13 to 16 lbs (6 - 7.2 kgs) for female dogs and their average height is 9 to 11 inches (23 - 28 cm) at the withers. The tail should be between 5-6 inches (13 - 15.5 cm).
9
Westies were originally bred for controlling the population of rats, fox, otter and other vermin. Today, this beautiful terrier is mostly a companion dog.
10
Westies were bred to be white so as to be easy to see, and therefore to distinguish from the prey when hunting.
