With an unusually life expectancy of 15-20 years, Xoloitzcuintle's are considered one of the healthiest and long living dogs.

Considered one of the oldest breeds in the world, the Xoloitzcuintle, also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, has been around for over 3,000 years. Artifacts and clay potter depicting the Xoloitzcuintle have been found in findings of the Mayan and Aztec civilizations.

Because of their supposed medicinal purposes, some cultures continue to eat the meat of the Xoloitzcuintle in parts of rural Mexico.

Xoloitzcuintles are named after the god of Aztec mythology Xoloitzcuintle, who, according to legend, created them from a sliver of the bone from which all human life was made. He instructed mankind to care for and protect the dog as it would lead departed human souls from the underworld to Heaven. Perhaps it is because of their supposed healing properties that 16th Century Spanish accounts tell of large numbers of dogs being served at banquets and feasts.

Xoloitzcuintle's can be expected to sell at anyehre between $450-$900 USD, although they vary significantly depending on the availability of the dog in your country of residence.

When Columbus arrived in the Caribbean in 1492, his journal entries noted the presence of strange hairless dogs. Xoloitzcuintles were transported back to Europe soon thereafter.

Hence its name, the Mexican Hairless Dog is known for its hairless body. Xoloitzcuintle's are very easy to groom and can come in a variety of colors. They shed very little, making them an appealing choice for allergy sufferers.

The Xoloitzcuintle has a body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows them to endure the cold climates. Also, Xoloitzcuintle's are generally quiet but they will make some noise whenever the sound of a stranger emerges, making those excellent watch-dogs.
